"ARTS ALIGNMENT" TEACHING ARTIST PROGRAM In-School workshops that align music with a Core Teaching Standard .
ACTIVE PROGRAMS FOR 2017-2018:
Life Without Music - Exploring cultural rights using the story of music in Afghanistan. Aligns with core standards in English Language Arts and Social Studies. We are approved "Hartford Performs" teaching artists- view our profile here! (1 visit, 60 minute workshop, grades 3-12)
Roots at 40: African American Spirituals and Florence Price - Using the "Five Folksongs in Counterpoint" for string quartet by Florence Price to explore spirituals. Aligns with standards in Social Studies/History. (1 visit, 60 minute workshop, grades 3-12)
The Shooting Gallery: Discussing Violence in Your Neighborhood - The artist Toyen's lithographs titled The Shooting Gallery depict violence through the eyes of a child. Composer Eden MacAdam-Somer has written music for string quartet go with these lithographs. We use arts and music to open the floor for discussion of violence in the lives of the students. This workshop is particularly geared toward schools in neighborhoods where violence is an issue. (1 visit, 60 minute workshop, grades 2-8)
CHAMBER MUSIC FOR PEACE
This is a program in the format of weekend workshops that ran in 2014, 2015, and 2016. It is scheduled to begin again in Fall 2018 in conjunction with a larger after-school music program in Hartford. We are working feverishly toward this lofty goal, so please stay tuned!
