East meets west as longtime friends from India and Connecticut come together to reimagine the instrumentation of traditional Hindustani raga. Madhurjya Barthakur (tabla) first made music with members of Cuatro Puntos Ensemble in Afghanistan in 2014. Now he is visiting the US for the first time, along with colleague Subhasish Bhawal (vocals), to make more music together. Join us as we incorporate strings into the colorful and mesmerizing sounds of traditional raga.

About
Subhasish Bhawal
Born in a family of musical stalwarts and exponents of Hindustani Classical vocal music, Subhasish Bhawal is one of the most promising artistes in the field of Hindustani Classical Vocal music. Growing up in an environment of music Subhasish's childhood witnessed the profound influence of music and he received his first music lessons in tabla from his father Shree Sunil Chandra Bhawal. Young Subhasish then went on to receive his first vocal lessons from Sangeetacharya Pandit Amaresh Chandra Chawdhury (disciple of Ustad Dabir Khan Sahab) of Senia Gharana with Dhrupad. After Pandit Chawdhury's demise Subhasish received his talim from his son Pandit Samaresh Chawdhury, an eminent vocalist and a disciple of legendary Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. He also sought his musical training under the guidance of the country's most eminent 'Vaageyakara' and vocalist Pandit Ramashreya Jha (Ramrang) in Allahabad (UP, India).
His mesmerizing journey continued and he thereafter received some of the most treasured lessons in vocal music from none other than the legendary vocalist, Padmashree Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar of Agra Gwalior and Jaipur Gharana in his days as a student in I.T.C. Sangeet Research Academy.
A first class graduate from Bengal Music College Subhasish studied Indian Classical Music as his honours subject.
His intricate understanding of music and graceful style has made Subhasish a name recognized in the field of Hindustani Classical Vocal Music not only throughout the country but also abroad. One among such endeavors is his Jugalbandi in Flute with Nilanjan Das. The duo have touched upon one of the rarest musical compositions of duet of Hindustani Vocal Music with Flute with the title 'Sayujwa'.
This highlights Subhasish's unique style that reflects a blend of beautiful musical compositions knit in a classical background.

Madhurjya Ranjan Barthakur is one of the brilliant Tabla (Indian Drum) player of the present generation of Indian Classical Music and an academician working for promotion for musical education.
Madhurjya was fortunate enough to have his ears accustomed to the divine fragrance of Indian classical music from his very childhood. His graceful style, intricate technique and his solid musical traditional background echo the great masters of the past.
Madhurjya has received his lessons in tabla from his illustrious father Dr.Dilip Ranjan Barthakur, an eminent Tabla player and a musicologist. He also had the great fortune to learn from his father’s guru Late Ustad Munne Khan of Lucknow. At the very tender age of three, Madhurjya had his initiation with the Ganda Bandhan ceremony by this great stalwart of Farukhabad Gharana.
Madhurjya has been actively working not only as a performer but also for the promotion of Indian Classical Music and Indian Culture by promoting musical education among youth in diverse areas. He has also been the propagator and promoter of Indian Classical Music in India and overseas including the war torn country of Afghanistan.
